A recent proposal relates M-theory to non-supersymmetric string theories via quotients of non-geometric spaces. I will outline this proposal and present the explicit mechanisms that give rise to the orientifolds of type 0 string theories and to non-supersymmetric heterotic strings. In particular, for the latter, a suitably modified version of type I' string theory that takes into account the non-geometric nature of the compactification reproduces the low-lying spectra of heterotic strings.
